Dogs - Loveable Companion or Fashion Accessory?

There has been plenty of attention put onto particular breeds of dog lately. Staffordshire Bull Terriers - the guard god, fighting, child killers. Chihuahua's - the Paris Hilton designer accessory tucked into the latest designer doggy carry bag, wearing the latest designer doggy jacket.

The question is; not which breed suits your lifestyle best, but what breed makes you look best. At least, that’s the impression today’s celebrities give.

This way of choosing dogs however, can and does lead to a variety of problems. PetClub UK urges all potential dog owners to look past looks, and realise that all breeds are suited to particular people and lifestyles.

A huge Great Dane may well give a young lad great street cred, but the breed won't do well without an active and spacious lifestyle, making it completely unsuitable for life in small flats or apartments. Chihuahuas are adorable little dogs, but have great big domineering personalities. Many owners fail to realise who is really boss, meaning the dog will often rule the roost. This can be quite amusing at first, but will soon lead to a range of behavioural problems difficult to overcome.

Chris Jones, Director of PetClub UK states: "You can't choose fashion over sense when it comes to animals; dogs are all individual and can't always be made into the ideal dog you want them to be. It is always possible to choose your ideal breed, and then make it look spectacular with the latest designer accessories. But you just cannot choose a breed because it will look best walking alongside you down the street."

Will the situation ever get better? Or will Britain's pet owners lose sight of what's important, and choose fashion over common sense? Only time will tell.
